There are plenty of computers below 600$ that can well fit your needs. Obviously there will be shortage of speed, capabilities, entertainment systems, and quality that come along with the price reductions but its up to you to decide whether you want all the extra stuff.
SPECIALIZATIONS TO LOOK FOR
When looking at a computer many smaller devices make up this computer to have it run the way they do. Computers are made up of Ram memory, Video cards, Sound cards, Hard drives, Cd-Drives, and processor. Each of these components very important, but very simple in estimating what you need. The most common misconception is that people tend to not even bother with these specifications which are the basis of your computer.

An average amount of ram is from around 6-GB of ram in the modern society today. What is Ram? Here is a quick video to help explain.
Ram
In short of the video you would want to be looking for a computer with more ram in order to be able to do more things at once. Such as in school you may have a music program running, Microsoft word running, YouTube, Facebook, etc. you would be able to do all these things at the same time no problem with the higher amount of ram you have, so it is up to you what you feel would suit you.
Video Cards
Most colleges today have changed their whole system in order to keep it updated to modern technology and have converted to computers which allows them to utilize what the computer can do. Most times professors have some sort of assignment dealing with a computer either with videos, gifs, power point, music, all these things deal with a video card. Video cards are not to much of an issue unless you want to game, or video edit, or music edit. Now choosing video cards are not to hard to choose from since the highest brands out there such as Nvidia, Msi, or Asus Geforce rule the market.
Hard Drives
Now hard drives are where all your information is stored including all you documents, pictures, videos, games, programs music, etc. The bigger hard drive you have the more room you have to fit all these files into. Now the average amount today is the 590 GB which is a decent amount of space for a college student. This is a highly recommended amount unless you are using this device for more than just college , such as gaming or editing, because these will take large amount of space and will require a larger amount such as 800 GB or 900 GB
Cd Drives
Strangely enough some computers do not come the ability to use Cd's which is not recommended for most. It is highly suggested to choose a computer with a Cd-drive and more than 2 USB ports.
Proccesors
Dominating the market as almost a monopoly Intel is driving almost every computer in the world as its processor. Now the decision is to choose a processor that they offer that is most suitable. More currently I7 processor is what computer are mostly running on now. The processor is the brain of your computer and controls how fast your browsing on the internet will be, how your interface is set up, how current the device is. It is the single most important part of your machine. For more information on this go to http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/processor-comparison/compare-intel-processors.html
